‘Women Harassed Me, Men Had No Problem’: Mallika Sherawat Opens Up On Why She Left India

Controversy could easily be the middle name of every person in the Bollywood film industry, more so the actors and actresses, who are often judged and kept a close eye on by the fans.

From their choice of clothes to their choice of films, everything is scrutinised and most times, it isn’t in a great light.

One such actress who was type-caste as soon as she entered the industry was the actress Mallika Sherawat who rose to fame with her hit film Murder.

The actress recently got candid in an interview and shared that her decision to leave the country for a while came after being bullied by a certain section of the media and press, that would go ahead and describe her as a ‘fallen woman’.

Sharing her two cents on how she feels that it is only in the past couple of years that people have grown more tolerant and understanding towards Bollywood films and their content, she shared how it wasn’t so when she started out.

“There was a lot of judgement, that ‘she has no morals’, ‘she is a fallen woman’, ‘look at the kinds of scenes she does, she wears a bikini, kisses on screen’. But it’s all a part of the experience, and I’m really happy that there has been a lot of growth in society. People have become more tolerant. Today frontal nudity is no big deal…,” Sherawat said.

She then went on to disclose that, “A certain section of the media was very… They bullied me and harassed me. And that really bothered me, because… And most of them were women. Men have never had problems with me. Men have always appreciated me. And I couldn’t understand why these women are so against me, and so nasty to me. And that made me leave the country for a while because I wanted a break. But today they are more accepting of me, and they are more loving, which I’m really enjoying.”

In fact, only recently the actress shared how a critic in the industry once compared her to a pornstar. She shared, “There was one critic who compared me to a pornstar and said Mallika is a pornstar. I don't have anything against them, it is not a judgement on them(the porn industry). But this is what the critics were writing, this is the low level they dropped into."
