The Shape of Water director, who reigned victorious at last week's Oscars, revealed that he divorced his wife of three decades Lorenza Newton in 2017. During a conversation with Mexican magazine Reforma told, “I separated in February, 2017 and divorced in September. But only few prople knew”.
Speculation about his marriage began to swirl, when he walked arm-in-arm with screenwriter Kim Morgan on the Oscar red carpet. She has also penned the director’s upcoming project, Nightmare Alley.
Del Toro has also thanked Morgan and his and Lorenza's daughters Marisa and Mariana, but made no mention of his ex in his acceptance speech at 90th Academy Awards. He said: 'I want to thank the people who have come with me all the way - Kimmy, Robert, Gary, Wayne and George, and my kids. He further added, “And I want to say, like Jimmy Cagney said once: "My mother thanks you, my father thanks you, my brothers and sisters thank you, and I thank you”. The Mexican film director won Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for his film, The Shape of Water.
In the interview, the director, however, said “I and Kim are just good friend and she had no part in his divorce. He further added, “She is working with me, we have a nice friendship. In case some news appears, let's clarify that I separated in February. I started working with her at the end of the summer”.
