The think-tank of the government, Niti Aayog, is planning to frame the policies for electric vehicles while all the other concerned ministries will be there to implement them, as decided by the Cabinet secretary headed meeting this week, thus, ending the tug of war among various entities.
Sources from the meeting revealed that the programme will be chaired by a mission director while Niti Aayog will act as coordinator.
Cabinet secretary summoned the meeting after reservations were advanced by different ministries, which included transport ministry, further stating that Niti Aayog is not liable to implement the agency for this pioneering programme.
The sourced who attended the meeting further disclosed that there needs to be a coordinated effort among all the ministries and concerned departments instead of trying to prove one-man ownership by one organisation. Each ministry has to do its own bit to make it successful."
Meanwhile, Niti Aayog has already drafted a policy for the electric vehicles and has suggested that EVs could enjoy green number plates. It further suggested that EVs may be given additional benefits like free parking facilities for first three years and also toll charges could be waived off.
