PM Modi ruled Twitter in 2017

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi rose to a new level in 2017 when it came to popularity in social media. He emerged as the top followed personality in India with around 37.5 million people following him. PM Modi previously had 24.6 million followers in 2016, that accumulates to 52 per cent increase this year.

The growth of 52 per cent was slightly lower than that of Indian Cricket Team captain Virat Kohli who saw a rise of 61 per cent since last year.

On the other hand, three hashtags - #TripleTalaq, #GST, #MannKiBaat – occupied the top 3 spots in the top hashtags list this year due to the magnitude of conversations it generated on that social media platform with more than 3,50,000 tweets each.

Interestingly, there was no other political personality apart from PM Modi to feature in the list of most followed Indians on Twitter in 2017.Only two sportspersons –Former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and current team captain Virat Kohli – making it to the Top 10 list.

The Top 10 was largely occupied by Bollywood superstars – Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Hrithik Roshan.
