'Padmavat' to clash with Akshay Kumar's 'Pad-Man' on January 25

After several delays for numerous reasons, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavat (previously Padmavati) will finally hit the big screens on January 25, a day before Republic Day. The historical drama will now be named after renowned Malik Muhammad Jayasi's 16th Century poem of the same name on which it is purportedly based.

Padmavat is a star-studded film which stars Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh, and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji. The movie was recently given a green signal by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), after as many as five modifications were forced to be made including a change in the title from Padmavati to Padmavat.

Interestingly, this is the exact date on which R Balki's Padman, starring superstar Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte, will release. Thus, two of the most anticipated movies will set for a mouth-watering box-office clash, as the makers of Pad-man have stuck to their decision of not shifting the release of their film, for any reason.

However, the Shri Rajput Karni Sena, which spearheaded the agitation against Padmavat, is not yet satisfied and is demanding a total ban on the film. On the other hand, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has stated that the film won’t be allowed to release in her state. She said it is a move to show respect the sentiments of the various people in the state.

“Rani Padmini’s sacrifice is a matter of honour and pride for Rajasthan and hence Rani Padmini is not just another chapter in history but our dignity. Therefore, we will not allow defamation of her honour,” the Rajasthan Chief Minister said.
