India should avoid copying Urbanisation strategies from China - Niti Aayog VC

Vice-Chairman of Niti Aayog Rajiv Kumar remarked this week that India should not replicate foreign models like that of developed nation China for urbanization. It only requires creating growth hubs all across the country.

He also commented that the country needs to use lesser resources per unit of Gross Domestic Product, whether it is materials or even environment. He said: "We do not need to look for models outside the country for our own urbanisation. It is sad that we constantly look for outside models for copy and pasting work. Considering our diversity and plurality, we cannot let inequitable or unbalanced urbanisation in our country. We should not allow India replicate what China has done before.”

He further added: “In China, development and modernisation happened along the coastline whereas other areas have remained backward. As a result of which on every Chinese New Year, we can witness around 5 million Chinese moving from coastline areas to inner parts. Thus, we cannot allow that to happen in our country. We cannot have people shifting from South and West to East on major festivals like Holi, Diwali, or Chhath."
